Services begin at new site October 2 (9/25/14)

Many people face emotional challenges and need mental health services.  But, even with healthcare reform, services are not always accessible:  many people cannot afford premiums, deductibles, and copays; others cannot wait weeks for an appointment; and some do not want mental health services on their medical record. There is a place where these barriers do not exist:  Walk-In Counseling Center, which will begin providing services at Neighborhood House on October 2, 2014.

Since 1969, Walk-In Counseling Center has provided free, no-appointment-needed mental health counseling services out of its original south Minneapolis location. In 2010, it began partnering with Family Tree Clinic and First Lutheran Church – Love Grows Here Wellness Center, both in St. Paul, to provide its free counseling services out of these locations and more conveniently serve folks in the east metro.

“Last fall we met with providers over a period of months to re-examine the mental health service needs of the community since we first expanded to the east metro. The outcome of our inquiry was very clear:  the free, easily accessible services we provide was needed – and wanted – in that area more than ever!” said Mary Weeks, Executive Director of Walk-In Counseling Center.

The success of Walk-In Counseling Center’s partnerships with Family Tree Clinic and Love Grows Here Wellness Center paved the way for this new expansion to Neighborhood House.  Like the other sites, Neighborhood House will provide free space in The Paul and Sheila Wellstone Center for Walk-In’s counselors, who will in turn provide free counseling services to Neighborhood House clients as well as individuals, couples and families from the broader east metro area.
