We are always seeking talented, motivated, caring people to join our volunteer teams.
We rely on the expertise and generosity of our 100+ volunteer counselors and team consultants to deliver high quality counseling to people with urgent needs, and 15+ volunteer receptionists to coordinate services during clinic hours.
The strength of our model is the passion volunteers have for the work and for the clients.
Volunteers work in teams that typically consist of four counselors, a team consultant and a receptionist. All clinics currently run on the Zoom platform.
Some volunteers commit to a weekly schedule. Others work certain hours each month and some are substitutes. Although Walk-In emphasizes the importance of continuity in the volunteer force, different time commitment options are available.
Walk-In uses a trimester system for volunteer scheduling. Each year the volunteer trimesters are defined as:
January-April
May-August
September-December
We need new volunteers on an ongoing basis to meet the ever-increasing demand for help.

Benefits of volunteering
Walk-In provides excellent clinical experience and consultation for volunteers, as well as free training on various topics throughout the year that qualify for up to 6 - 8 continuing education credits.
Our volunteer counselors and team consultants:
- Have lots of networking opportunities with other professionals
- Learn from other volunteers who have different professional training
- Offer their own professional experiences in an inter-professional environment
- Have an opportunity to work with a very wide range/diversity of clients
- Are involved in group consultation on an ongoing basis
- Have access to periodic training opportunities during the year
Our volunteer receptionists learn about counseling and therapy through group consultation, access to resources on mental health topics, contact with professionals in the mental health field and other opportunities that expand knowledge and skills in the mental health field.
Our volunteer administrative assistants learn about community resources through providing information and referrals to callers, and sharpen administrative skills.
Counselors
Walk-In’s volunteer counselors must have an advanced degree (master or doctorate) in psychology, social work, professional counseling, marriage and family therapy or other related program, be personally and professionally mature, and have relevant supervised work experience. It is preferred that counselors have or be working toward clinical licensure in their field.
There are limited slots for advanced graduate intern/practicum students working on their clinical degrees.
Generally Walk-In does not provide 1:1 supervision for graduate education in psychology or licensing in any field.
Our volunteer counselors:
- Commit to a walk-in clinic team, general weekly or every other week, for 4-5 hours. Clinics are weekday afternoons M, W, F, and weekday evenings M - Th.
- Provide individual--and occasionally couple and family--counseling with walk-in clients
- Counsel 1 - 2 (sometimes more) ongoing clients by appointment outside walk-in clinic hours
- Provide clients with information and referral for other mental health and related services in the community
- Follow-up with clients by phone when necessary
ADVANCED GRADUATE STUDENTS: If you are a student interested in a clinical field placement or practicum site at Walk-In, please contact Pang Chang, Director of Volunteers, at pchang@walkin.org or 612-870-0565 x 111.

Team Consultants
It is preferred that Walk-In’s volunteer team consultants have clinical licensure and the clinical experience required of counselors. Supervisory experience is also helpful. However, other licensure status and experience will be considered.
Team consultants work with individual counselors and the team as a whole to:
- Support walk-in clinic teams (counselors and receptionist) during walk-in hours.
- Facilitate teams during team consultation in reviewing cases and identifying appropriate treatment alternatives and resources
- Assist individual counselors with difficult cases or crises
- Consult with individual counselors regarding professional skills development and overall clinical issues
Team consultants are expected to commit to a walk-in clinic team, generally weekly or every other week, for 4-5 hours for 8 months minimum. Clinics are weekday afternoons (M, W, F) in Minneapolis, and weekday evenings (M - Th) in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Clinic Receptionists and Administrative Assistants
Walk-In looks for clinic receptionists and administrative assistants who have good interpersonal skills, empathy, good judgment, attention to detail and the ability to function as part of a team. Some background in psychology or the social sciences is helpful. Commitment to community service and reliability are essential.
Examples of people who volunteer as clinic receptionists and administrative assistants include undergraduate students in psychology or social work, people considering a career transition to the mental health field, first year graduate students, retirees and other concerned members of the community who are dedicated to ensuring that mental health services are accessible.
Our volunteer clinic receptionists support walk-in clinic teams:
- Greet walk-in clients
- Answer phones and provide information about clinic services and referrals to community resources
- Coordinate client flow and communicate with counselors and team consultant about clients to be seen
- Begin client files in database during busy walk-in clinics
- Participate in and provide input to team case consultation after each walk-in clinic
Our volunteer administrative assistants support Walk-In during non-walk-in clinic times:
- Greet clients who are coming for scheduled appointments
- Answer phones and provide information about clinic services and referrals to community resources
- Assist with mailings, assemble information packets and other administrative functions
